Prior to achieving our independent registered status, Stepping Stone began as a pilot project of the Elizabeth Fry Society in 1987 (which is why we warmly refer to this partner as ‘Mom.’) The staff at EFry deliver programs to individuals accessing Stepping Stone including anger management, personal boundaries and healthy relationships.
Mental Health Mobile Crisis

Mobile Crisis provides workshops to individuals who access Stepping Stone on services available in the community to maintain a healthy mind, as well as keys services for those who may be a mental health consumer.
Shared Care Mental Health

Community Mental Health Nurse, Pam Chisholm visits our drop in centre weekly and provides mental health services through private consultations and referrals.
Addiction Prevention and Treatment Services

Through Addiction Prevention we are able to offer Acupuncture at the drop in centre and provide access to a Counsellor to discuss issues surrounding reducing or stopping substance use.
Avalon Sexual Assault Centre & Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners

Avalon & SANE conduct workshops at Stepping Stone to discuss what a persons options are after experiencing sexual assault. They work with staff and individuals who access our program by providing information on how to access a SANE nurse and how to access follow up support through Avalon.
Dalhousie Legal Aid

Dalhousie Legal Aid provides important research to Stepping Stone on specific legal issues that impact sex workers in our city. They also provide legal workshops at the Stepping Stone drop in centre.
North End Community Health Centre (NECHC)

Through the continued support of the NECHC we have been able to provide bi-weekly services with Nurse practitioner, Sue McGowan as well as Flu Clinics providing vaccinations for the people who access Stepping Stone.
AIDS Coalition Of Nova Scotia (ACNS)

The ACNS & Stepping Stone deliver a series of harm reduction workshops for Sex Workers entitled Sex Work WHMIS, which include topics such as Introduction to Harm Reduction, HIV/AIDS 101, Sex Work Safety, STI Prevention, Self-Awareness, Support Strategies & Creating Community. Stepping Stone is also a partner in the ACNS annual AIDS Walk for Life.
Photovoice - Photographer Aaron Mackenzie Fraser

World Renowned Photographer Aaron Mackenzie Fraser, developed a program with Stepping Stone to provide people who access Stepping Stone photography basics & documenting through photographs. The Participants were given disposable cameras and asked to take photos that they felt were representational of themselves. The Participants also visited various galleries to see what other photographers had put forth in their work.
Pride Health
Pride Health is a Capital Health and IWK Health Centre sponsored program that aims to
improve safe access to health care by offering primary health care services for the GLBTI
community. Outreach health care services are offered at Stepping Stone which are free of homophobia/transphobia and heterosexism. Pride Health improves the coordination of
already existing services within Capital Health and the IWK as well as with stakeholders
of both these organizations by educating and raising awareness of health

Prostitution Education Program

In 2008 Stepping Stone was awarded a grant from the Canadian Women’s Foundation in partnership with The Body Shop, Hbc, Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, Scotiabank, Tides Canada Foundation, Individual Donors and The Shelter from the Storm partners (Winners and Homesense, Rogers Media Group and BMO Financial Group).
This funding is for expanded outreach services, building partnerships with service providers, increasing community education and awareness, and for this very website. Our service expansion also includes a monthly ‘safety night’ for sex workers at our drop-in centre.
United Way of Halifax Region

Stepping Stone is a funded agency of the United Way of Halifax Region. The United Way funds the core activities of our drop in centre and our street outreach program. Portions of this funding is also dedicated to the purchase of harm reduction materials, our resource centre, and other program costs.
Law Foundation of Nova Scotia

The Law Foundation of Nova Scotia provides funding for our Court Support and Legal Advocacy program for current and former sex workers. Through this program we provide one on one court and legal support, legal education and referrals, weekly visits to correctional facilities, workshops and community education.
Service Canada

In 2008 Stepping Stone was awarded a grant through Service Canada as part of the Homelessness Partnering Strategy to implement a program to address the substantial need to safe, adequate, and sustainable housing for former and current sex workers. Included in this program is advocacy with landlords and Nova Scotia Power. Extended housing placement support and enhancing capacity for sex workers are also key components of our housing program.
